Your clients look to you for the perfect manicure. But they consistently put their hands and nails through a lot. So why not help your manicure potentially last longer and give them some hand and nail care tips. Daily life such as cleaning, hand sanitising, gardening, central heating and cold winds all have a detrimental effect on our skin and nail plates.

Providing your clients with the best advice can help to keep their nails in tip-top condition and also help to maintain the longevity of their salon manicures. Here is our guide to the best ways to improve your client’s hand and nail care routine.

Nail Care Tips To Give To Your Clients

Hydration

One of the most important factors to improved hand and nail care, which leads to healthy skin and nails is hydration, advise your clients to drink water and lots of it. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and coffee will help your skin retain moisture. The daily recommended amount of water is 6/8 cups a day.

Moisturise

Get your clients into the habit of applying a good quality hand cream or recommend Inveray’s intensive rebuilding serum. Regular use will help to lock in moisture and improve the appearance of the skin. We recommend applying twice a day for maintenance, during colder months apply three times a day for extra protection against the elements.

Cuticle oil is very important to overall hand and nail care, regular use can promote nail growth and help build strong and flexible nails. When cuticle oil penetrates into the matrix of the nail the nutrients within the oil get distributed and moisture gets locked into the nail plate. Apply cuticle oil every night before bed.

Wear Gloves

Hot water, soap, detergents, harsh cleaning products and gardening can negatively impact your skin and nails. Harsh chemicals will strip the skin and nails of its natural oils. Advise your clients to always wear gloves when washing up, cleaning and gardening.

Not only will gloves protect their hands and natural nails it will also help to extend the longevity of their nail enhancements.

Nail Biting Really Impacts Hands and Nail Care!

We often see nail biters in the salon, nail biting (onychophagia) usually starts in childhood and is usually outgrown. However, for some, it can advance into adulthood to become habit forming. It is usually a nervous habit in response to stress or boredom, even absentmindedness or concentration can trigger the biting.

Steps that clients can take to help with nail biting include;

  • Using stress balls or beads to help to keep hands occupied,
  • Trying to manage stress and anxiety levels,
  • Apply a bitter nail polish designed for nail biters.

Most importantly advise clients to visit your nail salon regularly so you can help remove dead skin, and hang nails and hard skin which are tempting to bite.

Jewels Not Tools

We all know the saying “Jewels Not Tools” but it is never a truer statement. Our nails get bashed every day, but using them as tools is a no-no! For example opening cans of pop, doing everyday chores, picking up objects, computer work etc. We recommend that to improve hand and nail care you should try and reduce using your nails as tools wherever possible. Avoid opening cans with your nails, try using the handle of a fork or spoon to lever the can open, open letters and parcels with scissors and try to be mindful of what you are doing with your nails.

Filing Nails

Advise clients to be very gentle when filing the free edge, and to use a 100 grit file to take down the length and shape the side wall. We always advise clients to buff their own nails as over-buffing can lead to damage to the nail plate.
